If Microsoft's Xbox console is lacking one thing, it's support from Japanese developers. In particular, the lack of role-playing games on the system has long been an issue, and it doesn't seem like any Japanese development house will ever be turning one out.So Microsoft did the next best thing, recruiting, a British developer, to craft an RPG that seems Japanese. At first glance, it certainly looks the part, from its Japanese-sounding name – Sudeki – to its characters, designed with exaggerated proportions, blue hair and big, wide eyes.Cosmetics aside, Sudeki also takes its gameplay structure from Final Fantasy and its descendants, presenting a story-based linear adventure starring characters pulled from the list of RPG stereotypes – the brash young soldier with a tragic past, the smart-mouthed rebellious magic princess, the fierce and nearly nude Amazon warrior chick and the bespectacled scientist. They serve their kingdom, which they find out – surprise! – is corrupt.Sudeki's story is not especially engaging, but it is at least competently written – save for the crude, out-of-place double entendres that show up startlingly often. And considering this is a lengthy RPG, it's disappointing that the character dialogue rarely changes. When Tal, the soldier, is speaking to the queen, you expect that the question-and-answer options will be different from when Ailish, the princess, talks to her mother.
But they aren't. Sudeki's writers also fall into the trap of wanting to give every single character, major or minor, a unique made-up name, with embarrassing results – when the names aren't something out of a first-year Japanese class (main characters 'Buki' and 'Tetsu' mean 'weapon' and 'iron,' respectively – not exactly deep symbolism), they're of the pseudo-Tolkienian sort that an eighth-grader might invent for his first Dungeons and Dragons character. So Sudeki's storyline is not its high point. But combat is probably Sudeki's best feature, drawing on various styles of action gameplay. During battle, you can control any of the four main characters, letting the computer handle (if inexpertly) the other three.
Tal the soldier and Buki the warrior use a martial-arts style 'combo' system, where separate combinations of the A and X buttons produce different chains of attacks. The remaining characters actually fight in first-person shooter style, firing magic attacks from a distance. Unfortunately, battles happen too often, take about twice as long as they should, and quickly become repetitive and boring. Between battles, things progress in an entirely linear fashion with minimal exploration or backtracking. There are puzzles – mostly involving pushing around large blocks – with ridiculously simple solutions. Nearly 20 years ago, The Legend of Zelda perfected the block-pushing puzzle and Sudeki doesn't grasp even a hundredth of that game's depth. For a game with such pared-down features, Sudeki sure enjoys throwing nearly all of them at you too fast. Rather than introduce the main characters slowly and separately, you have control of the whole group within a few hours of play.

All of Tal and Buki's combos are available at the onset. Out of a host of different items and doodads, 90 percent of them are perfectly useless and should have been eliminated. And too many optional character skills and weapon upgrades are available at once, forcing you to decide which will be most effective based only on brief text descriptions. The 'M-for-Mature' rating on the front of Sudeki's box is rather ironic in that the game seems to be defined, above all else, by rampant immaturity. What merits the Mature rating?
A script filled with penis jokes, embarrassingly slutty outfits on the girls or piles of red goo that explode from enemies in their death throes? Ultimately, the underlying gameplay of Sudeki needs to grow up as well, for while its designers have copied the outward form of the Japanese RPG, they have failed to discover the gameplay balance that can make those games so rewarding.Sudeki is published by Microsoft for the Xbox and retails for about $50.
My entry for 11th Anniversary Contest (info here, really nice contest and amazing prizes ).I made this draw because i had to resist the temptation to do another RE one xD I know I have to do new things and themes so this is my choice. They are the main characters of the action rpg game Sudeki, down to up: Tal, Ailish, Buki and Elco. Done in Sai and edited in Photoshop. The background and the logo letters are of the the game.By the way I think I could finish another entry in time, I´ll try it.I hope likes it.Sudeki belongs to Climax Group.Drawn by me.
